Compress Video Online Free – Reduce Video File Size

Make big phone videos small enough for WhatsApp, email or Discord, right on your own device.

How to use: Choose a video, pick a quality and maximum resolution, press Compress video, then play the result and download the smaller MP4.

Runs on your device. When you press the button, a free open-source video engine (FFmpeg, about 31 MB) downloads once and is then cached. Your video is never uploaded.

How to use the Video Compressor

Phone videos are big: a one-minute clip filmed in 4K can be several hundred megabytes, which is too large for most email attachments, chat apps and upload forms. This video compressor re-encodes your video with the efficient H.264 codec, which every phone, computer and website can play.

Choose a video and pick a quality. Balanced suits most clips; Small file and Smallest file save more space with some softness. Lowering the maximum resolution (for example from 4K or 1080p to 720p) gives the biggest saving, and 720p still looks sharp on a phone screen. You can also remove the sound if you do not need it.

Press Compress video. The first time, your browser downloads the free FFmpeg engine (about 31 MB) and caches it. The work then happens on your own device, so speed depends on how fast it is: a short phone clip usually takes under a minute, while long or 4K videos can take several minutes. When it finishes you can play the result, see the before and after file size and download the MP4.

Which settings should I use?

For WhatsApp, choose Small file and 720p; WhatsApp compresses videos again anyway, so starting smaller saves your data. For email, most services cap attachments at around 20 to 25 MB, so pick Small file and 480p or 720p for longer clips. For Discord, check the upload limit shown in the app for your account, then pick a setting that brings the file under it. For keeping a good-quality archive copy, choose High quality and Keep original resolution.

If the result is still too big, the quickest extra saving is to cut away parts you do not need with the Video Trimmer before compressing. Removing the sound with Mute Video also helps if the audio is not important.

How video compression works

A video file is mostly made of the picture data. The compressor decodes every frame and encodes it again with H.264 at a quality level called CRF: a lower number keeps more detail, a higher number throws away detail your eyes are less likely to notice, such as fine noise in dark areas. Scaling down the resolution reduces the number of pixels in every frame, which is why it saves so much space.

Because the video is re-encoded, compression cannot add quality that was not there. If your video was already compressed by a messaging app, the saving may be small. In that case the tool will tell you the before and after size so you can decide whether to keep it.

Tips for the best result

Close other heavy tabs and apps while compressing a long video, especially on a phone, because the work uses your device’s memory and processor. Keep the screen on until it finishes. Very long videos (over about 10 minutes) are better split into parts with the trimmer.

VSH take: most online compressors make you upload your private videos to a server, wait in a queue and then add a watermark or a size limit. This one runs entirely in your browser, so your family videos and work clips stay on your device. Use these tools only on videos you made or have permission to edit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed by your own browser on your own device, so it never reaches our server and no one else can see it.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, no limits on the number of videos and no watermark added, because your own device does the work.

How much smaller will my video be?

It depends on the original. Phone videos recorded in 1080p or 4K often shrink a lot at 720p Balanced, while videos already compressed by WhatsApp or another app may shrink only a little.

Which formats are supported?

MP4, MOV (iPhone), WebM and MKV work in most browsers. The result is always a widely compatible MP4 (H.264 and AAC).

Why is it slow on my phone?

The video is processed by your own device instead of a server. Shorter clips and a lower resolution are faster.
