How to use the Mute Video
There are many reasons to remove the sound from a video: background noise, wind, a private conversation in the background, music you do not have the rights to post, or simply because you plan to add a new soundtrack in another app.
Choose a video and press Mute video. The tool copies the picture exactly as it is, without re-encoding, and leaves out the sound track. That means there is no quality loss at all and it is fast even for long videos, because your device does not have to rebuild any frames. MP4 and MOV videos are saved as MP4, and WebM stays WebM. If a video uses an unusual format that cannot be copied, the tool automatically converts the picture to MP4 instead.
Play the result to check that it is silent, then download it. The muted video is usually a bit smaller than the original, since the sound data is gone.
Common reasons to mute a video
Wind noise on a beach or a bike ride, a TV playing in the background, someone saying a phone number or address, music that a platform may block, or simply a clip you want to use as a silent background loop on a website or presentation. Muting also makes a short clip safe to autoplay, since many websites and slides play videos silently anyway.
If you only want to lower background noise rather than remove all of the sound, record a fresh voice-over with the Voice Recorder and add it in your phone’s video editor.
Why mute instead of turning the volume down?
When you share a video, the people who watch it control the volume, not you. Removing the sound track makes sure nobody can turn it back up, which matters if the background contains private details like names, addresses or a phone call. It also helps on platforms that flag copyrighted background music.
Keep the sound instead?
If you want the opposite, saving just the sound, use Video to MP3. You can also make a smaller file with the Video Compressor, which has a Remove sound option, or cut out only the noisy part with the Video Trimmer.

Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is processed by your own browser on your own device, so it never reaches our server and no one else can see it.
Is it really free? Is there a watermark?
Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, no limits on the number of videos and no watermark added, because your own device does the work.
Does muting reduce video quality?
No. The picture is copied without re-encoding, so it is identical to the original.
Can I mute only part of a video?
Not yet. This tool removes all of the sound. You can trim the video into parts and mute only the part you need.
Which formats work?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. MP4 and MOV are saved as MP4.
