Video to GIF Converter – Make GIFs from Video Free

Turn a moment from your video into a smooth, looping GIF for chats, slides or websites.

How to use: Choose a video, set the start time and length, pick a width and frame rate, then press Make GIF and download the looping GIF.

Runs on your device. When you press the button, a free open-source video engine (FFmpeg, about 31 MB) downloads once and is then cached. Your video is never uploaded.

How to use the Video to GIF

GIFs play automatically and loop everywhere, from chat apps and forums to slides and email, which makes them perfect for reactions, short how-tos and product demos. This converter turns any part of your own video into a GIF.

Choose a video, play it to the moment you want and tap Set start at current position, or type the start in seconds. Set the length; 2 to 6 seconds is ideal, and the maximum is 30. Pick a width and a frame rate: 480 pixels wide at 12 frames per second is a good balance between smoothness and file size.

Press Make GIF. The tool first builds a custom 256-colour palette from your clip and then uses it for every frame, which keeps colours far cleaner than a generic GIF converter. The finished GIF plays in the preview so you can check it before you download. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no watermark on the GIF.

Keeping GIFs small

GIF is an old format: it stores every frame as a picture with up to 256 colours, so it is much larger than an MP4 of the same clip. Size grows with width, frame rate and length. If your GIF is too big, first shorten it, then lower the width to 320 or 480 pixels and the frame rate to 8 or 12. Clips with little motion and simple backgrounds stay smallest.

Some apps and sites have limits on GIF size, so check them before you post. If a site accepts video, a short MP4 made with the Video Trimmer looks better and is much smaller.

Great uses for GIFs

Show a quick step in a tutorial, reply with a reaction from your own clip, demonstrate an app feature in a bug report, or add movement to a presentation. For a single still image instead of animation, use the Video Frame Grabber; to add funny captions to a picture, try the Meme Generator.

VSH take

VSH take: the palette step is what separates a crisp GIF from a blotchy one, and it runs here on your device for free with no watermark. Keep GIFs short, and use your own videos or ones you have permission to share.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed by your own browser on your own device, so it never reaches our server and no one else can see it.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, no limits on the number of videos and no watermark added, because your own device does the work.

How long can my GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds, but 2 to 6 seconds gives the best mix of quality and file size.

Why is my GIF file so big?

GIF stores every frame as an image. Use a smaller width, fewer frames per second or a shorter length to shrink it.

Will the GIF have sound?

No. GIF images cannot contain sound. Use the trimmer for a short MP4 if you need audio.
