Resize Video for Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts & TikTok

Fit a landscape or square video into a vertical 9:16 frame with a stylish blurred background.

How to use: Choose a video, pick a size (9:16 for Reels, Shorts and TikTok), choose blurred, black or white bars or fill, then press Resize video and download.

Runs on your device. When you press the button, a free open-source video engine (FFmpeg, about 31 MB) downloads once and is then cached. Your video is never uploaded.

How to use the Resize Video for Reels, Shorts & TikTok

Reels, YouTube Shorts and TikTok are vertical, 9:16. If you post a landscape or square video, the app may crop off the sides or show it as a small strip. This tool places your whole video in the frame you choose and fills the empty space with a blurred, zoomed copy of the same video, the look you see on many popular channels, or with plain black or white bars.

Choose a video, pick a size and decide how to fit it. Fit whole video keeps everything visible with bars. Fill the frame zooms in until there are no bars, cutting off the edges, which suits videos where the action is in the centre. 720ร—1280 is quicker to make and is fine for phone viewing; 1080ร—1920 is full HD but takes longer on your device.

Press Resize video. The result is an MP4 at 30 frames per second with your original sound, ready to upload.

Common sizes

9:16 (1080ร—1920 or 720ร—1280) is used by Instagram Reels and Stories, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Snapchat and WhatsApp Status. 4:5 (1080ร—1350) takes up the most space in the Instagram and Facebook feed. 1:1 (1080ร—1080) is a safe square for most feeds. 16:9 (1280ร—720) is the classic landscape format for YouTube and TVs. If you are unsure about a size, the Aspect Ratio Calculator can help.

Apps change their recommendations from time to time, so check the upload screen if something looks off.

Blurred bars vs crop

Blurred bars keep your whole picture, which is important for screen recordings, group shots and anything with text near the edges. Fill (crop) looks more immersive and is good for close-ups and a single person in the middle of the frame. Text placed near the top and bottom of a vertical video can be hidden behind app buttons, so keep captions near the middle; you can add them with Add Text to Video.

Before you post

Short videos perform best when they get to the point fast, so trim the start with the Video Trimmer first. If the file is too large, run it through the Video Compressor.

VSH take: the blurred background trick is the easiest way to make an old landscape clip look at home in a Reel, and here it is free, private and watermark-free. Use these tools only on videos you made or have permission to edit.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is processed by your own browser on your own device, so it never reaches our server and no one else can see it.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up, no limits on the number of videos and no watermark added, because your own device does the work.

What size is a Reel or Short?

Vertical 9:16, usually 1080ร—1920 pixels. 720ร—1280 is the same shape and still looks sharp on phones.

Will it crop my video?

Not with Fit whole video: your full picture stays visible with bars. Choose Fill only if you want the edges cropped.

Is the sound kept?

Yes, the original sound is kept and saved as AAC in the MP4.
