In brief

The federal government will invest up to $254 million in the Saint John Trade Corridor in New Brunswick, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced on October 21, 2026. The money comes from the $5-billion Trade Diversification Corridors Fund and aims to let Port Saint John handle between 850,000 and 1 million containers (twenty-foot equivalent units) a year.

What the money pays for

According to Transport Canada, the project will expand and upgrade port warehouses, add a new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility, and dredge and repair marine infrastructure so fully loaded ships get at least 30% more high-water tidal windows. It also stabilizes the shoreline at the Bayshore Rail Terminal, which protects the port's only rail link, upgrades 103 km of New Brunswick Southern Railway track with continuously welded rail (raising mainline speed to 64 km/h), and rebuilds Simms Corner so trains and cars no longer share the same crossing.

Who is involved

Partners include New Brunswick's Regional Development Corporation, the Saint John Port Authority, New Brunswick Southern Railway and the province's transportation department. The plan builds on more than $76 million already committed through the National Trade Corridors Fund and on recommendations from the Atlantic Economic Panel, which flagged Saint John as a gateway with room to grow. The announcement came the same day Ottawa and Ontario unveiled a separate $8.7-billion tariff action plan.

VSH take: ports rarely make headlines, but faster rail and fewer tide delays can shave days off how long goods take to reach store shelves. Track the loonie against other currencies with our currency converter, and if you are planning an East Coast trip, compare fares on our flight deals hub.
