Records that may never fall

Bradman’s 99.94. Don Bradman needed just four runs in his final Test innings in 1948 to finish with an average of 100. He was bowled for a duck. No one else with a long career has averaged even 70.

Muralitharan’s 800. The Sri Lankan off-spinner took his 800th Test wicket with his last ball in Test cricket, at Galle in 2010. With fewer Tests played now, many think 800 is out of reach.

Tendulkar’s 100 hundreds. He made 51 in Tests and 49 in ODIs over 24 years. Virat Kohli has since passed his ODI tally, but the combined 100 is still the benchmark.

Records still moving

Some lists change every season. England’s Joe Root has climbed to second on the all-time Test run list, behind only Tendulkar, and is still adding runs. Kohli keeps extending the ODI centuries record. In T20 internationals, the leading run-scorers and wicket-takers change quickly because so many more matches are played now. That is why we list only firm career records in the table, and give rounded figures for active players.

Famous individual scores

Brian Lara is the only player to hold the Test record twice, with 375 in 1994 and 400 not out in 2004, both against England in Antigua. Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 is the highest ODI score. Fun fact: the first ODI double century was made by Tendulkar, 200 not out against South Africa in 2010.
