Only eight countries have ever won it, which tells you how hard it is.
2026: Spain again
The 2026 tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico was the first with 48 teams and 104 matches. Spain beat holders Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring in the 106th minute. It was Spain’s second title, 16 years after the first. Lionel Messi, playing a record sixth World Cup, scored eight goals. Kylian Mbappé won the Golden Boot with ten and finished as the all-time World Cup top scorer on 22.
Finals worth knowing
The 1950 “Maracanazo”, when Uruguay beat Brazil in Rio in front of about 200,000 people, still hurts in Brazil. In 1966 Geoff Hurst scored the only hat-trick in a men’s final until Mbappé matched him in 2022. That 2022 final in Qatar, 3–3 before Argentina won on penalties, is often called the greatest final ever played.
Next World Cup
The 2030 tournament will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with opening games in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay to mark 100 years. Follow international football on our live scores page.
