The stories behind the list
Nobody gave Rajasthan Royals much hope in 2008. They had one of the cheapest squads, but Shane Warne’s captaincy got the best out of unknown players, and they beat Chennai on the last ball of the first final.
Chennai and Mumbai then shared most of the next 15 years. Chennai’s 2018 title, won in their first season back after a two-year suspension, is a favourite with their fans. Mumbai’s 2020 win in the UAE made them the second side to defend the trophy, after Chennai in 2011.
For years RCB were the team everyone felt sorry for: big names, huge crowds and three lost finals. That ended in 2025 when they beat Punjab Kings. A year later, in Ahmedabad on 31 May 2026, they beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets, and Virat Kohli finished the chase with a six. Gujarat Titans won in their very first season, 2022, under Hardik Pandya.
Name changes to know
Kings XI Punjab became Punjab Kings in 2021. Delhi Daredevils became Delhi Capitals in 2019. Royal Challengers Bangalore changed its spelling to Bengaluru in 2024. Deccan Chargers no longer exist; Sunrisers Hyderabad took their place in 2013.
