Who usually tops the table?
The United States has topped the Summer Olympics medal table more often than anyone else, including every Summer Games from 1996 to 2024 except Beijing 2008, when China won the most golds. Paris 2024 was the closest finish in years: the USA and China both won 40 gold medals, and the USA came out on top on silver medals. During the Cold War the Soviet Union often led instead. In 1992 former Soviet countries competed together as the Unified Team.
Recent Winter Olympics
- Milano Cortina 2026 (Italy): Norway topped the table with 18 golds and 41 medals in total, both Winter Olympic records. Cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won six golds, the most by anyone at a single Winter Games.
- Beijing 2022: Norway, 16 golds.
- PyeongChang 2018: Norway, level with Germany on 14 golds but ahead on total medals.
For a country of about five and a half million people, Norway’s winter record is remarkable. Skiing is part of everyday life there from childhood.
Cities that hosted more than once
London is the only city to host the Summer Games three times (1908, 1948 and 2012). Paris (1900, 1924, 2024) and Los Angeles (1932, 1984, and again in 2028) will also reach three. Athens (1896, 2004) and Tokyo (1964, 2020) have each hosted twice, and Australia has hosted twice in two different cities, Melbourne and Sydney.
Coming up
Los Angeles hosts the Summer Games in 2028, with cricket back on the programme for the first time since 1900. Brisbane follows in 2032. The 2030 Winter Olympics go to the French Alps.
