Who has won the most World Cups?
Australia, by a distance. They have lifted the trophy six times: 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015 and 2023. Their run of three in a row between 1999 and 2007 is still the high-water mark of one-day cricket. India and the West Indies have two titles each, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka and England have one apiece.
Finals people still talk about
1983, Lord’s. India arrived as outsiders and defended just 183 against a West Indies side chasing a third straight title. Kapil Dev’s running catch to send back Viv Richards is the moment most Indian fans of that generation can describe from memory. That win is widely credited with turning India into the cricket-mad market it is today.
2011, Mumbai. MS Dhoni finished it with a six off Nuwan Kulasekara, and India became the first team to win a final on home soil. It was also Sachin Tendulkar’s sixth and last World Cup.
2019, Lord’s. England and New Zealand finished level on runs after 50 overs and level again after the Super Over. England won on the boundary-count rule, which the ICC scrapped soon afterwards. If you want one match to show someone why cricket can be dramatic, this is it.
2023, Ahmedabad. India had won all ten of their games, but Travis Head’s 137 in front of more than 90,000 fans gave Australia a sixth title.
How the tournament has changed
The first three World Cups were 60 overs a side, played in white clothes with a red ball. Coloured clothing, the white ball and day-night matches arrived in 1992. The number of teams has moved around between 8 and 16. The 2023 edition used 10 teams in one big round-robin.
