2026 Roth IRA contribution limits
The IRS limit applies to all your traditional and Roth IRAs combined, and you cannot contribute more than your taxable income. For 2026 it is $7,500, plus a $1,100 catch-up if you are 50 or older.
| Filing status | Full limit below | No Roth contribution at |
|---|---|---|
| Single / head of household | $153,000 | $168,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $242,000 | $252,000 |
| Married filing separately (lived together) | $0 | $10,000 |
Between the two figures your limit is reduced in proportion. The calculator uses the IRS worksheet rule: the reduction is rounded up to the next $10, and a limit above zero is never less than $200.
How the growth projection works
Each year the balance grows by your expected return and then your contribution is added. The result is shown in future dollars and in today’s dollars using your inflation rate. It assumes a steady return, which real markets do not give, so try a few rates such as 5%, 7% and 9%.
Why people like Roth IRAs
Contributions are made with after-tax money, and qualified withdrawals in retirement are tax-free. You can take out your own contributions at any time without tax, though withdrawing earnings early can bring tax and penalties. Details are on the IRS IRA contribution limits page.
VSH take: contributing early in the year gives money more time to grow, but a steady monthly amount is just as good for most people. This is general education, not tax advice. See also the 401(k) calculator and the retirement calculator.
